Cardiff City have joined the race to sign Southampton striker Charlie Austin on loan until the end of the season.The 29-year-old has been told he can leave this month, however Saints are more interested in a permanent deal.According to talkSPORT sources, the Bluebirds are one of four clubs trying to sign the Englishman before the window shuts at 11pm on Thursday night.Austin has fallen out of favour at St Mary’s under new boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, with Danny Ings established as the first-choice striker and Nathan Redmond often utilised up front.2

And Hasenhuttl recently admitted Austin could become the latest big name to leave the club this month.“I think we have a lot of options for two positions, so it can be a possibility that he’s leaving,” Hasenhuttl said.“But if not then I’m happy that he’s here and helps us to chase our targets that we have. “As every player, also he wants to play from the beginning in the starting XI.“And if there’s not the option here in Southampton maybe we’re looking for another club where he has this option.”Steven Davis and Cedric Soares have already sealed loan moves this month, while Manolo Gabbiadini left for Sampdoria on a permanent deal.2

Austin is not part of the Saints manager’s plans

Cardiff are in desperate need of a striker, having played utility-man Callum Paterson up front for most of the season so far.Emiliano Sala, the club’s record signing from Nantes, tragically disappeared after a light aircraft carrying the striker and pilot David Ibbotson went off radar over the Channel Islands on January 21.
