Former Real Madrid defender Pepe has turned down a January move to Arsenal to instead secure a switch to Monaco, according to reports.The 35-year-old is a free agent after his contract with Turkish side Besiktas was mutually terminated in December after just a single season at the club, and he had been expected to return to his homeland with former team Porto.Pepe wants a move to Monaco1

However, Arsenal had also been linked with making a swoop for the Euro 2016 winner.But it now appears the Portugal international will join Monaco instead, according to L’Equipe, as Thierry Henry battles to save the club from Ligue 1 relegation.Pepe is best remembered for his decade-long spell with Real Madrid, where he won three Champions League trophies and three La Liga titles. Monaco are also close to completing a deal to sign Henry’s former Arsenal team-mate Cesc Fabregas, who is believed to have played his final match for Chelsea on Saturday.Gunners boss Unai Emery is in desperate need of bolstering his defence, which has been depleted in recent weeks due to a spate on injuries.Rob Holding will miss the rest of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament, whileHector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal are also sidelined.
